CHASING TRANE: John Coltrane

Chasing Trane is a sweeping biography of the jazz titan and free thinker whose boundary- shattering, otherworldly music continues to influence music fans and artists around the world. Director John Scheinfeld (The U.S. vs. John Lennon) creates a rich and compelling narrative, moving from Coltrane’s roots through his work with Miles Davis, his legendary album A Love Supreme, his addictions and his spiritual awakenings. Denzel Washington provides the film’s narration, taking on the voice of Coltrane himself, whilst insightful commentary and cameos come from Sonny Rollins, Cornell West, MC Common, McCoy Tyner, Carlos Santana, Kamasi Washington, Yasuhiro Fukioka, Michelle & Ravi Coltrane and others. Set against the social, political and cultural upheaval of the mid-20th century, Chasing Trane brings its subject to life as a multidimensional being, inviting the audience to engage with Coltrane the man as well as Coltrane the visionary.

"The genius of John Coltrane comes to life in an elegantly crafted documentary that can hook jazz novices as well as connoisseurs." Variety

His sons and community, struggling to come to terms with the consequences of colonisation, are lost. LONG STRANGE TRIP: Grateful Dead

At last the Grateful Dead have the documentary they deserve. Directed by Amir Bar-Lev (The Tillman Story), and with Martin Scorsese as executive producer, this is a lovingly meticulous account of the life and times of the countercultural avatars, masters of psychedelic jamming and kings of the road. The freewheeling film tells the story of bandleader Jerry Garcia’s childhood and the band’s formation on the San Francisco scene in the ’60s, their endless tours in the ’70s and ’80s, Garcia’s tragic death in 1995, and more. Interviews with surviving band members, a wealth of archival footage and a spectacular sound track highlight a colourful and music-saturated epic that will enthrall Deadheads, and for others will be a gateway drug for what will surely become a love for one of the most influential bands in music history. Please Note: Film is around 4 hours long!

"A movie that every Deadhead in the kozmic universe will want to see... (all) the sprawl and generosity of a good Dead show." Variety

BUNCH OF KUNST: SLEAFORD MODS

With a healthy respect for Wu-Tang Clan and an even healthier disrespect for Tories, capitalism, celebrity and pop culture, working class East-Midlanders SLEAFORD MODS rip into the status quo armed with little more than a microphone, a laptop and a beer crate. Groovescooter present the Australian Premiere of Christine Franz's unpretentious roc-doc Bunch of Kunst, the story of a British duo who have gone from bedroom, to pub, to playing in front of big crowds (like that trajectory derailing show at Glastonbury) and eventually signing a control-maintaining deal with Rough Trade. Often funny, but also revealing, it shows the indie/DIY ethic is still alive and well.]

JEFF DUFF: KINGS BLOODY CROSS

We did something similar with the inimitable Jeff Duff a year ago when the singer, songwriter, actor and bohemian first released his gold-leafed memoirs This Will Explain Everything via Melbourne Books. Now as Kings X threatens to implode under lock-outs, conservatism, developers (again!) and baby strollers, the good folk from Hidden Sydney have invited us to do it all over. Part of the Vivid Festival and a restaging of their interactive theatre project, Kings Bloody Cross is a series of talks with local identities about the rich histoy of the area, recalling days when party revellers, artists, sailors and sex workers made this a far more fun place to live and visit. Having lived in the area during much of its former bohemian glory and counting Bowie as a neighbour, Jeff will spill the beans as he talks extensively with Paris from Groovescooter. Plus there's bound to be a performance from Jeff too.

SYL JOHNSON:
ANY WAY THE WIND BLOWS
+ Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos) Q&A

Featuring interviews with RZA (the Wu-Tang Clan), Prince Paul (De La Soul), Peanut Butter Wolf (Stones Throw), Jazzy Jay (Afrika Bambaataa’s Soulsonic Force), Louis “Breakbeat Lou” Flores (Ultimate Breaks & Beats), Otis Clay and starring the man himself, SYL JOHNSON, this intimate portrayal of one of the most sampled men in music history, comes direct from the filmmaker for its Australian debut at Golden Age Cinema + Bar.

From iconic tunes like Is It Because I’m Black and Different Strokes, to his hit version of Take Me To The River, Mississippi-born Johnson should have enjoyed far greater success early on, had his record company not been focussed so heavily on label-mate Al Green. Gutsier and grittier than Green, like other Hi Records artists OV Wright, Anne Peebles (I Can’t Stand The Rain) and Otis Clay (The Only Way Is Up) Johnson was overshadowed by Green’s soaring trajectory resulting in him looking to alternate careers. That was until hip hop producers began sampling the soul-blues-funk guitarist/singer’s records spurring on new generations of fans. More recently Johnson’s music career has been reinvigorated, helped along by the multi-Grammy nominated Numero box-set Complete Mythology and international touring which saw him visit Australia a few years ago backed by Aussie funksters The Bamboos. Anyone who saw those shows, knows the 80 year-old remains an energised powerhouse. Now you can experience Johnson’s story from humble beginnings to the Grammys in a lovingly made film that sees an artistic life coming full circle.

With a number of Best Documentary awards and a run of festival screenings to its credit, director Rob Hatch-Miller (whose video work for Daptone acts like Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings has been enjoyed by many) gets inside the mind of an under-appreciated musician who continues fighting for his just dues. He also provides fiery concert footage, both archival and new, and sets it all to a funky soundtrack and an original score by Yo La Tengo. Interviews with the aforementioned, along with singer Syleena Johnson (Syl’s daughter), make this an informative and enjoyable documentary. Straight after tonight’s screening, Lance Fergusson of Melbourne’s internationally regarded funk combo The Bamboos will be live in the cinema talking about his experiences touring with Johnson and the art of songwriting. This is your only chance to see this film in Sydney.

GARY NUMAN:
ANDROID IN LALA LAND

"Startlingly honest and sincere, this is essential viewing for fans of Numan and electronic music." [Austin360]

At the end of the 1970s, a very young and unprepared GARY NUMAN became one of the world's biggest-selling recording artists, with global hits like Are Friends Electric? and Cars. His career could have gone in a completely different direction though. After stumbling upon a synthesizer on his way into a recording studio (one that the last player just happened to leave on, set to a growling sub-bass preset that would stop Numan in his tracks as he absentmindedly hit a key on his way past) Gary Numan's as-yet unlaunched career suddenly found its direction. This random interaction with machine also meant the debut LP the Beggars Banquet label thought they were getting would now sound completely different. Luckily for the label, it catapulted him to almost instant stardom. The press reacted as if no one had seen or heard anyone like him before. Of course we had, but Numan still forged something utterly unique, from the immediately recognisable vocal tone, to the cold synthetic, dystopian tracks and those startlingly made-up robotic alter-egos. The press and the public knew little about Asperger's syndrome back then. It was at the centre of Numan's assiduous, tunnel-visioned ambition, but also drove the press to label him a freak, one paper even suggesting his parents should have been doctored for giving birth to him. Depression, anxiety, near bankruptcy and a long period in the wilderness followed. Then Numan met one of his biggest fans...

With honesty, humour and warmth, this new film captures a remarkably candid Numan recounting his journey and navigating a return to the stage and his recording studio, while the public and press awaits a new album. As the drive to make music propels him afresh, a heartwarming story and a man far more human than his image would suggest, emerges.

GREGORY PORTER (Blue Note)
IN CONVERSATION

Blue Note recording artist and Grammy-winning singer, GREGORY PORTER combines the gentlist of spirits with one of the most majestically powerful voices in contemporary jazz and soul. Whether it's his moving, breakthrough Motor City protest single, 1960 What?, his collaborations with British electronic producers Disclosure or his new #1 jazz LP Take Me To The Alley, Porter continues to win over audiences while swinging effortlessly between hand-clapping gospel and seriously good jazz bop.

Following his standout set at Glastonbury Festival earlier his year, Porter is playing two already sold-out shows in Australia this September. Tonight however, he will be live In Conversation with Groovescooter's Paris Pompor talking about everything from music, the art of songwriting and his creative inspirations, to growing up in Bakersfield with seven siblings and a mother who instilled in him strong ideas of social justice. TIM RITCHIE IN CONVERSATION

To coincide with our exhibition for Sydney Fringe Festival (see below), Groovescooter is happy to announce Tim Ritchie In Conversation at Play Bar in Surry Hills. Tim Ritchie is something of a local legend. From his renowned gate crashing radio career debut on Sydney's Double J (when in 1976 after ringing the breakfast announcer to complain was challenged to come in and "do a better job" - which he then did for many years) to his much loved Radio National program Sound Quality and beyond, Tim Ritchie has been an ardent supporter of Australian music and independent artists. He was also one of the early champions of dance and electronic music in Australia both on-air and in clubs.

You're invited to come along and hear Tim chatting at length to Groovescooter's Paris Pompor and also ask him your own question. Tim will be talking about his career, motivations, the inspirational people he has met and interviewed, and of course his more recent rise as a talented photographer. He will also take us back to a pre-Lockout Law Sydney of the '80s, when pre-dawns didn't find him on the streets taking photographs as they do these days, but rather stumbling out of now-defunct clubs following his nightly DJ sets. A recent portrait of Tim done for for the 2016 Archibald Prize by Sydney artist Adrian Elmer, will also be on display at this event. RSVP below to be in the audience.

TIM RITCHIE
PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

After a couple of years talking with him about it and looking for the right space, Groovescooter are thrilled to announce the first solo exhibition by former Radio National Music Director and one of the original 1980s Double J crew, Tim Ritchie.

From light-tripping abstracts to brutal architectural angles, acute observations to stunning panoramas, Tim’s photographs of early morning Sydney have become an unmissable feature of the daily social-media feeds for thousands of locals. Now Tim presents a specially selected collection of signed, one-off original prints displaying the breadth of his styles at Folonomo Gallery in Surry Hills, co-curated by Artemis Projects.

On Tuesday 13 September Tim will also be In Conversation with Groovescooter, sharing stories of a now lost-Sydney: a pre-dawn world where memory rather than photos recall characters spilling out of long-defunct inner-city clubs after his DJ sets. See above for more In Conversation event details.

EAT THAT QUESTION
Frank Zappa In His Own Words

Born in 1940, FRANK ZAPPA - self-taught composer, musician, bandleader, producer and independent thinker -first transcribed his avant-garde, Varèse-influenced compositions onto paper at fourteen. He only began to write lyrics in his early twenties. Nevertheless, upon the '66 release of his debut album, FREAK OUT! (with The Mothers Of Invention), he swiftly became the most quotable voice of dissent in popular music. A subtle, skilful montage constructed solely from historic footage, Eat That Question-Frank Zappa in His Own Words is an energetic celebration of this outspoken maestro painstakingly gathered by director Thorsten Schütte from the obscure vaults of TV stations around the world to create this unique 90 minute feature documentary. Following Zappa from clean-shaven, besuited youth, to fearless chief freak, to his relentlessly productive final days before his death at 52, Eat That Question… seats us right up front from the start; close enough to Zappa to read the flickering emotions in his eyes.

"Eat That Question collect disparate concepts and perceptions and unifies them into a riveting film, delivered in my father's own words. It's a remarkable history lesson and serves as a gateway into his musical mind." [Dweezil Zappa]

  LEE SCRATCH PERRY'S
VISION OF PARADISE

The one movie that explains it all.

Filmed over 15 years, this is the true story of visionary reggae producer Lee Scratch Perry, a maverick pioneer of dub. It’s also a guide on how to change the world using art and music. With unprecedented access to Perry’s inner-world, the sonic and spiritual collide as we travel with the famed ‘Upsetter' from Jamaica to Ethiopia, Switzerland to London. From his legendary and largely mysterious Black Ark Studio (where he recorded Bob Marley and many others - but how did he get those sounds?), through current cross-continental artistic spaces and on to his glimpses of the future, the Grammy-winning fighting-fit septuagarian is both candid and confounding in this suitably psychedelic portrait from German filmmaker Volker Schaner. Alongside Perry, the film features a host of music notables including Dennis Bovell, Adrian Sherwood, Ashley Beedle, Martin Glover and reggae-historian David Katz.

Included in Rolling Stone Magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, Perry has worked with everyone from Keith Richards, The Beastie Boys, George Clinton, Moby and Ari Up of The Slits, to David Lynch. After numerous decades behind the controls, and now 80, he continues to innovate and inspire, whether giving modern-day dancehall a booty-shaking run for her money, or teaming up with The Orb more recently to attract world-wide critical acclaim afresh. This is a must see for any reggae and dub fan.

Delighted to have Australian musician Mick Harvey (ex-Boys Next Door/Birthday Party and Bad Seeds) join us for our In Conversation series. As always, it's FREE but this time around it not only takes place surrounded by the must-see Berlin photo exhibition Brilliant Dilletantes, but we're also doing another screening of the brilliant, bristling B-Movie Lust & Sound In West Berlin on the same night with our friends at Antenna. Mick Harvey lived and played in Berlin during the period covered by the film, the 1980s. It was a decade bookended by post-punk and the birth of street dance party culture and Love Parade. We'll therefore be chatting to Mick about this period of trashy, druggy, anarchic, creative revival and what it was like to live and work through it alongside the film's energetic protagonist Mark Reeder, as well as artists like Joy Division, Gudrun Gut, Blixa Bargeld, band mate Nick Cave, Einstürzende Neubauten, Malaria!, Cristiane F, DJ Westbam who all feature in the film. Mick will be chatting with Groovescooter's Paris Pompor, come early and check out the exhibition, watch the film and then hear Mick's stories and find out what's coming up for him this year.

ECCO HOMO
Sydney Premiere + Q&A

On 21 February 2016 at Event Cinemas George St, Queer Screen and Groovescooter present the Sydney Premiere of the latest film from directors Richard Lowenstein + Lynn-Maree Milburn: Ecco Homo. From the team behind the wonderful Autoluminescent: Roland S. Howard, it’s another artistically rendered story of an Australian creative outsider, this time provocateur and queer chameleon, Troy Davies. From his music and video work with/corruption of Hunters & Collectors, Michael Hutchence, Ollie Olsen, Big Pig's Sherine, DeckchairsJohn Clifford (remember Motorcycle Baby?) and others, to his numerous artistic endeavours… the documentary takes us from the set of cult classic Dogs In Space, through Sydney drag clubs, and ultimately right into the darkly troubled rooms of a family home full of unspeakable secrets. A life lived to the fullest with full-on and often heartbreaking outcomes.

Richard Lowenstein and producer Maya Gnyp will also be joining us in the cinema for a Q&A.

BAM BAM BAM: The Story of Sonzeira
+ Gilles Peterson live In Conversation

Join influential DJ, producer and world-wide tastemaker GILLES PETERSON live In Conversation at Golden Age as he presents the AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE of BAM BAM BAM: The STORY OF SONZEIRA. A wild journey deep into the favelas of RIO DE JANEIRO, this feature-length documentary follows Gilles on a never-ending search for the perfect beat and a HOLY GRAIL LP he’s been coveting for years. The film also tells the story behind his latest album, Sonzeira recorded with Brazilian luminaries SEU JORGE, MARCOS VALLE, ELZA SOARES and WILSON DAS NEVES, alongside an emerging generation of musical innovators. Along the way viewers are treated to fascinating insights into the evolution of Brazilian music, culture and the vibrant hub of Rio.

Continuing Gilles’ Peterson’s exploration of Brazil, Bam Bam Bam creates a colourful itinerary of people, places and events that passionately represents the real side of Brazilian culture and music: beyond the typical Football and Copacabana clichés. Screened only a handful of times since it’s release, this is your first and only opportunity to see it in Sydney with one of the world’s most respected musical archivists on hand to answer your questions. Gilles will also be In Conversation with Groovescooter's Paris Pompor straight after the film.

STRETCH AND BOBBITO
Australian Premiere Screening

During the 1990s, Stretch and Bobbito introduced the world to an unsigned Nas, Biggie, Wu-Tang, and Big Pun as well as an unknown Jay-Z, Eminem, and the Fugees. The total record sales for all the artists that premiered on their radio show exceed 300 million. The late night program had a cult following in the art/fashion world and prison population as well. All would loyally tune in for the humor just as much for the exclusive tunes. Stretch and Bobbito brought a unique audience together, and created a platform that changed music forever.

Directed by Bobbito Garcia himself, come and see this on the big screen in Sydney for the first time with likeminded folk. One night only!

"
One of the greatest British films made” [Mojo]

Rarely seen on the big screen and boasting a fantastic opening sequence that will have you hooked from the go-get, this groundbreaking 1980 reggae drama centres around a West-London soundsystem fronted by Blue (played by BRINSLEY FORDE of the band ASWAD). In Thatcher’s England, Blue has to tackle issues of race and police brutality, along with worries about his two-timing girlfriend. There’s also an upcoming soundclash with a competing soundsystem run by JAH SHAKA. Life is spiralling towards a climax…

Co-written with MARTIN STALLMAN (Quadrophenia), director FRANCO ROSSO’s portrayal of Brixton and surrounds provides a highly authentic dramatisation of a unique culture set in a politically charged time and place. Add to that a soundtrack composed by dub-reggae legend DENNIS BOVELL, plus tracks by JOHNNY CLARKE, I ROY, ASWAD, YABBY U, and you have a cinematic experience that will bow the speakers.

“Must be seen” [N.M.E.]

“Rarely screened… unjustly ignored… Cult classic. Exceptional… when it next hits the big screen, don’t miss out…” [Reggae News]

B-MOVIE LUST + SOUND IN WEST-BERLIN 1979-89
SYDNEY PREMIERE

From Post-punk to Love Parade, featuring Joy Division, Gudrun Gut, Blixa Bargeld, Nick Cave, Einstürzende Neubauten, Malaria!, Cristiane F, DJ Wesbam and more.
In the 80s Berlin was like a B-Movie, ugly and poor, but wild, creative, and incredibly sexy. To the thousands of people who flocked to 1980s Berlin, anything was possible. Mancunian writer-musician Mark Reeder was there, armed with a Super 8 camera to document it all. B-MOVIE revisits the vibrant music and art scene of West-Berlin during the divided city's punky, druggy, trashy 1980s heyday, blending never seen before footage starting with punk and ending with the Love Parade. It shows everything from the creative deliberations of a young Nick Cave to performances in industrial spaces of legends such as Christiane F, Einstruzende Neubauten and Westbam. An energetic and moving collage of a wild decade.

"Highly engaging … an appealing memoir of a wild decade." (Hollywood Reporter)

"...a fascinating portrait of a lost world of almost-surreal parties, rampant counter-culture and uninhibited artistic potential. (AU Review)

September is Dementia Awareness Month and this heart-warming documentary focussing on music therapy will bring hope to carers, families and the growing numbers of Australians affected by Alzhiemer’s and related conditions. Bring your tissues - it's utterly soul-stirring.

THEORY OF OBSCURITY
A Film About The RESIDENTS

Following its world premiere at SXSW this year, Groovescooter is thrilled to finally announce the Sydney premiere of Don Hardy's documentary Theory Of Obscurity about one of the most intriguing musical acts/arts collectives of the last six decades, THE RESIDENTS for the Sydney Underground Film Festival (SUFF). From their beginnings in San Francisco in 1969 to the present day, this eye-ball masked multimedia troupe has continued to innovate, confound, challenge, surprise and delight whilst remaining completely anonymous. Featuring Gerald Cassale (Devo), Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads), Les Claypool (Primus), Penn Jillette and maybe The Residents themselves all theorising not only about what makes this group so special, but also who the hell they are! Have members of The Beatles been part of the line-up? Does that explain the cover of their debut LP Meet The Residents? These and other questions will remain unanswered. NORTHERN SOUL Australian Premieres
Film + Q&A + After-Party

We've been working on premiering this film here in Australia for many, many months and are thrilled to finally announce some cinema screenings including the Australian launch in Sydney in April, followed by the Melbourne premiere in May. in association with Entertainment One. Set in 1974NORTHERN SOUL is an uplifting tale of two English friends, played by newcomers Elliot James Langridge and Joshua Whitehead. Fuelled by amphetamines and ambition, like the army of real-life Wigan Casino pilgrims they portray, the pair discover Black American soul music’s infectious rhythms and raw emotion, witnessing the birth of a culture that changed a generation. Support cast includes Steve Coogan, Antonia Thomas and Lisa Stansfield.

Written and directed by award-winning photographer Elaine Constantine (who has been nominated for a 2015 BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by Writer/Director or Producer), Northern Soul is a beautifully crafted homage to a music phenomenon/sub-culture that continues to this day around the world, not least here in Australia. Authentically recreating the dance moves, club vibes, DJ culture and fashion from within the scene itself, the film has an OUTSTANDING SOUNDTRACK (available also on vinyl in a re-issued boxset) that will have you dancing in the cinema aisles. DO NOT MISS THIS FILM, our special Q&A in Sydney with some original Wigan Casino regulars and the After-Parties put together by our friends from The Australian National Northern Soul Weekender (Sydney) and Soul-A-Go-Go in Melbourne.

CHARLES BRADLEY: SOUL OF AMERICA

Did you miss this the first time, when it screened just once in Sydney on an island in the middle of the harbour? Well with Charles Bradley himself returning to our shores in April to play Bluesfest and also Sydney's Enmore Theatre on April 2nd with Alabama Shakes, we thought it was high time this award-winning documentary - which premiered at SXSW and went on to play numerous festivals around the world - got another large-screen airing in Sydney.

Directed by Poull Brien, Soul Of America tells the remarkable and sometimes tragic story of Daptone soul-singer Charles Bradley, whose debut album rocketed him from a hard life in the Brooklyn Housing Projects and an early career imitating James Brown, to Rolling Stone Magazine's Top 50 albums list of 2011. Bradley is now considered one of the world's finest soul-funk artists, alongside reigning soul queen, Sharon Shones who similarly found acclaim late in life and also features in this moving cinematic portrait.

OUT IN THE NIGHT

Director/producer blair dorosh-walther’s multi award-winning documentary, OUT IN THE NIGHT tells the story of women facing the full-force of male violence and a media and legal system steeped in racism, homophobia and misogyny. Four of these late-teen/early twenties friends out in New York one night, went on to become known as The New Jersey 4.

Under the neon lights in a gay-friendly neighbourhood of New York City, a man violently and sexually threatened a group of young African-American lesbians as they walked home one hot August night in 2006. A fight began, captured by security cameras nearby. All the women were rounded up and charged. With the media quick to slap on the crass term ‘Gang of Killer Lesbians’, this doco gives voice to the women involved so they can share their accounts of what really happened. Out In The Night has won multiple awards and screened to sold out theatres around the world.

Out in the Night is not a movie; it’s a movement” [The Bilerico Project]

“This impassioned social issue documentary serves as a strong indictment of tabloid journalism and a prejudicial legal system.” [Hollywood Reporter]

STORIES OF OUR LIVES

Exquisitely shot and with a music score by Jim Chuchu of the Nairobi-based Nest Collective, Stories Of Our Lives compiles hundreds of as-yet-untold narratives from those in Kenya identifying as LGBTIQ, into one stunning and confronting cinematic experience. It’s a harsh environment, often sad and involving struggle, but one where there is also hope, pride, joy, endurance and survival. As Q-Zine observed in a recent issue featuring Stories Of Our Lives: Love Can Be A Revolutionary Practice.

“The most common question we are getting from Kenyans in Kenya on our phones, inboxes and in conversations is “can we watch the film privately/at night/via BitTorrent/on YouTube/with the lights down low/under the bed/on mute etc.?” or, “Can you guys give us the film on a flash drive or leave it on the street, in a bar, at my church, somewhere for us to find”?

Stories Of Our Lives has not screened in its homeland due to strict classification laws. Its executive producer, George Gachara was arrested late 2014 and faces a hefty fine or imprisonment. Here in Australia we enjoy the freedom to see it - and doing so is a small, but meaningful act of solidarity with those whose stories it tells.

In Conversation

2SER and Groovescooter's live interview series, In Conversation returns for 2015 with a double-header for Mardi Gras

When Simon Hunt unleashed his drag-dissident persona Pauline Pantsdown in 1997, few could have predicted Pantsdown would outlast her political prototype from Ipswich. A decade and a half later, Pantsdown is still motivating thousands of social firebrands into action, with an inclusive agenda that goes way beyond Queer. Using a wicked sense of humour, Hunt’s creative, colourful and fun approach to tackling injustice is matched by a social media presence many federal ministers would die for. With recent world events making political and religious satire a highly charged topic once again, this in-depth chat with one of Australia’s leading agitators will be topical, entertaining and provide insights into one man’s merging of the political with the personal. Simon Hunt will be talking with Groovescooter's Paris Pompor as well as answering your questions.

2SER and Groovescooter's live interview series, In Conversation returns for 2015 with a double-header for Mardi Gras

Long-time friends and music mavericks Paul Mac + Jonny Seymour have worked with everyone from LCD Soundsystem, Kylie Minogue, George Michael and Sia, to the Bangarra Dance Company and fashion designer Carla Zampatti. Whether soundtracking films, nightclub backrooms, art galleries or catwalks, between them they revolutionised Sydney’s clubbing landscape with Club Kooky, and the ARIA Awards with an infamous acceptance speech. These days sought-after remixes and DJ sets as Stereogamous find them spreading beats and bear-hugs at Gay Pride events spanning Berlin to London, NYC to Madrid. With an anticipated new Paul Mac album due out this month and a collaboration at Carriageworks for Mardi Gras, the down-to-earth pair will chat with Groovescooter's Paris Pompor about the past, present and future.

NAS: TIME IS ILLMATIC
The Journey. The Music. The Legacy...

The Film. The Sydney premiere of One9 + Erik Parker's 2014 feature-length documentary film that delves deep into the making of Nas' 1994 debut album, Illmatic, and the social conditions that influenced its creation. Twenty years after its release, Illmatic has become a hip-hop benchmark that encapsulates the socio-political outlook, enduring spirit, and collective angst of a generation of young black men searching for their voice in America.

We're thrilled to be screening this in Sydney ahead of Nas' 2015 Australian tour, where he'll be performing the album in full - especially given the Sydney leg of the tour at the Enmore has already sold-out. Featuring Nas alongside Roxanne Shanté, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Q-Tip, Pharrell Williams, Jabari “Jungle” Jones, Fab 5 Freddy, Pete Rock, Dr Cornell West, Busta Rhymes and others, after opening the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, Sydneysiders now have the opportunity to see it on the big screen for the first time.

BEAT STREET
30TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING + BREAKDANCE COMP

Set in New York, and featuring everyone from Grandmaster Melle Mel, Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa through to the Rock Steady Crew, this seminal hip hop drama stars a young Rae Dawn Chong, Guy Davis + Saundra Santiago and was produced by Harry Belafonte. Arthur Baker headed up the music department (who could forget his Breakers Revenge from the soundtrack?) so it's little wonder the film's music and moves made an indelible mark on budding hip hoppers the world over, not least here in Australia where it found an enthusastic cinema audience. Released in 1984 (not a bad year for music films, given this is our second 30th anniversary retrospective screening for 2014) Beat Street inspired many local DJs, breakers, MCs and graff artists and so we thought it was a fun (and cheap) way to wind up a really successful screening year for Groovescooter following a load of sell-out cinema screenings in 2014 and some memorable Q&As.

We're happy to have skilled turntablist DJ Frenzie (Groove Therapy) live on the wheels of steel for the night as we also invite breakers to strut their stuff after the film. Winners in the breakdance competition will take home some great prizes, plus we'll have DVD and vinyl giveaways for those not quite up to busting their toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes for the judges. Speaking of judges: Rosano Martinez (aka El Assassin) of groundbreaking Aussie crew Westside Posse/Sound Unlimited/Renegade Funktrain (who performed with the film’s Rock Steady Crew at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion back in 1984) and local B-girl CATWMN (aka Catherine Tsang whose floor skills see her performing in competion both here and in Singapore) will be casting their eyes over the floor and deciding who takes home the prize booty.

GIMME SHELTER: THE ROLLING STONES
Q & A + SPECIAL SCREENING

Called "the greatest rock film ever made" and recently inducted into the Top 50 Documentaries of All Time by the British Film Institute's world-wide industry poll, this landmark film follows The Rolling Stones on their notorious 1969 US tour. The tour culminated in the tragic events of the Altamont Speedway concert, when 300,000 members of the Love Generation collided with a few dozen Hells Angels. Direct Cinema pioneers David and Albert Maysles were there to immortalize it all on film, including the bloody clash that transformed a decade’s dreams into disillusionment.

Our special guest for a post-screening Q&A is former tour manager for The Rolling Stones, Sam Cutler. Cutler not only appears in the film but was left behind to negotiate with the Hells Angels and the various mobsters/groups who had become associated with Altamont. Cutler is also the author of You Can't Always Get What You Want: My Life with the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead and Other Wonderful Reprobates (Random House). Facilitating our Q&A with Sam Cutler will be Sydney Morning Herald's chief music journo, Bernard Zuel.

  STOP MAKING SENSE: TALKING HEADS
30TH ANNIVERSARY SYDNEY SCREENINGS

Arguably the greatest concert film ever made marks its 30th Anniversary in 2014. This beautifully restored version of award-winning director Jonathan Demme's film captures the big-suited David Byrne and his jerky art-rock group Talking Heads at the height of their prowess in a visually-inventive setting that continues to sear indelible images on the minds of all who see it.

Joined on stage by an all-star line-up including keyboardist Bernie Worrell (Parliament/Funkadelic), Alex Weir (The Brothers Johnson) and Lynn Mabry (Sly and The Family Stone) the group reinterpret Heads classics like Psycho Killer, Girlfriend Is Better and even a Tom Tom Club tune by Heads' super bassist Tina Weymouth. Shifting from stripped back acoustic renditions to highly percussive funk meltdowns, this is a cinematic music experience like no other.

  SUPER DUPER ALICE COOPER
AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE

We're back with another co-present at the truly independent, outsider screen-shocking symposium the Sydney Underground Film Festival SUFF.

There can be only one Alice Cooper, a gender-bender name bestowed upon preacher’s son Vincent Furnier during a Ouija board-revelation of his previous life as a persecuted witch... of course. Since the 1970s, he has donned the distinctive long black hair and dark eye make-up, and coloured his on-stage antics with chicken slaughtering and other theatrics, claiming his place as the founding father of shock rock. This artfully made documentary dissection of his crazy life matches the fame and frenzy that followed in his wake. Sex, drugs and music are just the start of it. In interviews, clips and archival material spanning the very beginnings, to his headlining heydays and his endurance amongst new generations, Super Duper Alice Cooper wades through his dreams and welcomes viewers into his nightmares.

KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON

Not only a beboppingly delightful look at jazz giant Clark Terry, but also a heartwarming (take your tissues) exposé into friendship, mentorship and the power of music to bond. Now aged 94, trumpeter Clark Terry's story is remarkable, and in this unlikely debut from Australian director Alan Hicks, we also learn of his enormously generous spirit through his relationship with 23 year-old piano prodigy, Justin Kauflin. Clark's former students include Miles Davis and Quincy Jones, so fittingly Jones stars alongside Herbie Hancock, Bill Cosby and Dianne Reeves in this moving portrait.

“He is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, trumpet players ever!" [Dizzy Gillespe]

“Without a doubt, the top of the list, he was my idol man”
[Quincy Jones]

INGA - 'TWO DANGERS'
EXCLUSIVE AUSTRALIAN VERSION

Inga Liljestrom's new album Two Dangers is finally shipping! This is an exclusive-to-Australia version of the album (which is released overseas simultaneously) featuring additional tracks not included on the European version. It comes with lyric booklet/photos in a gorgeous digi-pak. 13 tracks in all, some of which were previewed on the 2012 tour-only ltd-edition Songs Of Sorrow... New Inga compositions join traditional songs like the Karen Dalton fave Katie Cruel as well as beautiful covers versions of Some Say I Got Devil (Melanie Safka) and Cat Stevens' Trouble.

In Inga's own words... "My inspiration: a tattered picture I ripped from a magazine of a woman sitting on her bed smoking a cigarette, naked, her long hair wild and disheveled, paint pealing off the walls. I imagined these as the songs she would listen to. The recordings feature my friends playing resophonic guitars, banjos, burnished horns, spooky musical saws, violins, creaky boards and dusty boots. The songs are a mix of traditional folk and original songs penned while living with my sister in the mountains influenced by Appalachian mountain music and a touch of '50s romance. I have no idea why my muse presented me with this style of music, but I loved singing it and found it a refuge for broken hearts and lonely nights."

  BORN THIS WAY
A poignant but unsettling portrait of lesbian and gay people in Central Africa, Shaun Kadlec and Deb Tullmann's film about Cameroon's queer underground spotlights a community dealing with some of the harshest laws against homsexuality anywhere in the world. Shot in guerilla style, we meet people like
Gertrude and Cedric, alongside workers at a clandestine safe-house and human rights lawyer and advocate, Alice.

Born This Way is both heart-wrenching and heart-warming, a moving documentary that offers an intensely personal insight into day-to-day life for some in modern Africa.

PORTRAIT OF JASON
This is quite possibly the most conversation-provoking vision you'll have all year and certainly unlike anything you've seen before or are likely to experience again in a cinema. An intense, funny, moving, ambiguous and complicated portrait of NY hustler (or is he?) Jason Holliday. Directed by Shirley Clarke, who spent a 12-hour night in December 1966 ininterviewing the - some might say 'outrageous' - Jason, Portrait of Jason is brave, provacative and game-changing filmmaking. Clarke edited the interview into 105 mintues of eyebrow-raising, direct-to-camera anecdotes from a man who spent his life challenging ideas of class, race, profession, sexuality and gender. Who gives you work and why should you do it. Who are your friends and what are their motivations? What is truth and what is fiction? No wonder Ingmar Bergman exclaimed it to be "the most extraordinary film I've seen in my life."

VIRAMUNDO
A Journey with GILBERTO GIL

Australian Premiere for Antenna Documentary Film Festival
Iconic Brazilian singer, guitarist and songwriter Gilberto Gil undertakes a musical journey across the globe: from Bahia in Brazil and townships in Soweto and Johannesburg, to indigenous communities in Sydney and Yirrkala in Northern Australia. As one of the key figures in Brazil's tropicália movement and with an enduring music career, Gil has spent many years touring the globe. Here however, the former Minister of Culture goes on a different kind of tour exploring issues of racism and identity and how music and creativity can help promote a new, culuturally diverse world vision. Director Pierre-Yves Borgeaud documents the trip, which includes Gil meeting Peter Garret in Australia, mixing concert footage from South Africa and the Amazonian island of Isla de Flores, with Gil's conversations along the way and ultimately his hopes and doubts, for future generations. BROTHERS HYPNOTIC
Australian Premiere for Antenna Documentary Film Festival
The eight sons of anti-establishment Sun-Ra trumpeter Phil Cohran are the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a tight crew of amazingly talented musicians from Chicago’s South Side, brought up on their father’s steadfast ideals to remain fiercely independent artists at all costs. The film unfolds as the brothers are on the rise, gigging with the likes of Mos Def and Prince, taking the international festival circuit by storm and recording with Damon Albarn’s label Honest Jon’s. As success beckons, they find themselves at a crossroads – will they remain street performers and self-distributors of their work, or choose to let go of their inherited principles and find their own, new way forward? (RC - Antenna). Directed by Reuben Atlas this beautiful film also offers glimpses into a unique family unit as well as Cohran's history.

CROSSING BORDERS: IN CONVERSATION
This special In Conversation session is our first with a panel and is timely given people seeking refuge in this country has dominated not only the recent federal election - where both major parties were in a hurry to ignore international conventions - but also the five elections before it.

Exploring both the intensely personal and the sweeping political elements of migration, the condition of being a refugee, and the role of the documentarian in illuminating these issues, four filmmakers will give their views on what it means to fight for refuge, rights and recognition, and to be both connected to and separated from family across the globe. Kaveh Bakhtiari, director of Stop-Over, Khoa Le, director of Bà N?i, join local filmmakers Rihab Charida and Zanny Begg, to discuss how looking through a lens can give us a unique perspective on belonging and identity. The session is free and will include screenings of the short films Counting Olives and Rights of Passage by Rihab Charida and Zanny Begg. The session will be moderated by Paris Pompor.

A Journey with MUMIA ABU-JAMAL
Australian Premiere for Sydney Underground Film Festival
This is a remarkable film and a moving story, which we're very pleased to be co-presenting with Radio Skid Row and Eastside Radio, both of whom celebrate 30 years on air in 2013.

Former Black Panther Party member, continuing activist, radio journalist and author, Mumia Abu-Jamal has spent 30 years in prison, 29 of them in solitary confinement on death row. He is often referred to as Pennsylvania’s most famous inmate and his trial and incarceration have garnered extensive media attention. Yet it is his life and revolutionary spirit that have connect with people the world over and commanded more wide spread international attention as he continues to promote his message from the depths of incarceration. In Long Distance Revolutionary, documentarian Stephen Vittoria focuses on Mumia Abu-Jamal's career as a prolific writer and journalist. Ushering the audience behind the prison walls to expose the horrors of the American gulag, the film charts a journey that defines the triumph of hope, courage and love.

Australian Premiere for Mardi Gras
Groovescooter
and Eastside Radio's recurring music-meets-film night Cellar-uloid Sessions returns for 2013 with the local premiere of director Kieran Turner's rockumentary Jobriath A.D. - the true story of the "true fairy of rock 'n' roll" glam. Fittingly, we're camping out at The Oxford Hotel's rather more velvety Gingers Bar this time and partnering with Queer Screen - for a tragicomic tale of one androgyne's meteoric rise to obscurity.

Despite the massive billboards in Time Square, despite major label backing, despite a Cecil B. DeMillesque marketing plan, despite being hailed as The New David Bowie, it seems the world wasn't ready for glam's first openly-gay "lost god" Jobriath in 1973. Morrissey has long been singing Jobriath's praises, others have been heavily influenced by this small-town Pennsylvanian escapee turned Hair-cast member turned Next Big Thing. Now  Kieran Turner spotlights Jobriath's unique life story, through his music, flamboyance, those costumes and that manager! Did he really end up living in a pyramid on the roof of the infamous Chelsea Hotel before he sadly died in 1983? Find out as Marc Almond [Soft Cell], DJ Ann Magnuson [N.Y.s Mudd Club], Gloria Jones ['Tainted Love'], Jayne County ['Are You Man Enough To Be A Woman'] and many others help tell the story along with some great footage.

Songs of Sorrow for the Hollow of His Heart... A special, advance-preview 2011/2012 Australian tour edition of Inga's upcoming acoustic album ONLY AVAILABLE AT THE GIGS.

The album is another unexpected turn from Inga mixing divinely rendered traditional/folk songs (from 'Black Is The Colour' to 'Katie Cruel') with moody, almost sinister new Inga compositions like 'Two Dangers', 'Warfaring Ways' and the dark voyage of 'Woden Leg'. Featuring the sounds of resophonic guitars, banjos, squeeze boxes and burnished horns, right through to spooky saws, dusty boots and creaking boards, the 13 track album was recorded in windblown weatherboard stereoscope in Australia's answer to the Appalachians: The Blue Mountains.

The album will be available to buy commercially mid-2012, but to celebrate Inga's return to Sydney and her return to the Peats Ridge Festival, a special edition will be at the shows for purchase.

You can preview the tune 'Bird' from the album here

The third solo album from bearded angel Scott Matthew, is for anyone who loves the weighted, emotion-charged torch songs of Antony & The Johnsons, or indeed the work of Matthew's friend and fellow Groovescooter artist, Inga Liljestrom. You may know Scott Matthew haunting voice from the riotously poignant queer flick Shortbus (director John Cameron-Mitchell's follow up to Hedwig & The Angry Inch) or from Scott's previous two solo LPs, or indeed from Scott's previous band Elva Snow with ex-Morrissey man Spencer Cobrin. But really, whether you're familiar with Aussie-born New Yorker Scott Matthew or not, this new album is sure to bewitch. Drawing comparisons to everyone from Elvis Costello to Bacharach, Scott Walker and Council-era Paul Weller to the aforementioned Antony, Scott Matthew's music ministers straight to the heart. Whether in stripped-back mode with his trustee ukulele, or skipping through Technicolor sets amongst lush strings and beautifully sung harmonies, Scott sings with such conviction and invests such emotion in his tunes and vocal performances, that it's like leafing through a diary with a close friend.

We're very excited to welcome Scott Matthew to the Groovescooter family and release his beautiful 3rd album in gorgeous digipak, complete with colour booklet of lyrics and photos.

The first Australian single from Scott Matthew's third solo album is The Wonder Of Falling In Love. Bittersweet pop, with touches of Style Council-era Paul Weller, Elvis Costello and flourishes of Bacharach-like strings and '60s swing. If you fell in love with Scott Matthew's voice and poignant songwriting in the audacious sex-comedy-cum-post-9/11-drama film Shortbus, then for The Wonder Of Falling In Love imagine the bearded angel re-cast on to the set of a Technicolor romance.

One of a number of Gotye performances from the Groovescooter backcatalogue and before his meteoric rise to worldwide fame, now made available digitally. Wally's stunning remake of Depeche Mode's Just Can't Get Enough. Recorded in Gotye's home with a stripped-bare piano backing and flipped into a minor key, the results are a million miles from the song's synth-pop origins. With additional fx and mix by Mothloop, the tune had some love early on via Triple J as part of a Groovescooter Feature Album, but has recently been getting loads of love on YouTube and you can now purchase high quality digital versions for you iPod.

AT LAST - THE WAIT IS OVER!

The wait has been worth it, as Inga Liljestrom delivers a brand new studio album featuring 11 fresh recordings made in Europe. From the frenetic rush of THE RAIN AND THE SEA and the chokingly claustrophobic capture-then-release of MASCARA BLACK. From the primordial voodoo of HIS THEIVING WAYS and the thrilling epic dramatics of RAMA, to the floral folk pickings of tender tunes like LOVERS GUN and WILDEST HORSE ... this new Inga record is an amazing journey. Hold on to your hair, Inga's grown wings, has a new band of French players and together they're leaping off cliffs on fire! For more information, tracklisting, reviews etc.

Check out the VIDEO TEASER featuring first single Bittersweet or listen to the whole song here.

Finally, Inga's debut album 'Urchin' is back in stock - but for this 2010 repress, collectors edition, we've added quite a few extras! With many of you hanging on for a new Inga album (yes, it's recorded, mastered and on it's way - we promise) the album that first turned many folks on to the charms of Inga Liljestrom has been lovingly repressed on Groovescooter's da dAdA imprint with a bunch of bonus tracks - including a brand new single THISTLE. 'Thistle' is one of those tender, magical, intimate and gooseflesh-inducing songs from Inga's quiver of heart-breaking arrows which features her inimitable voice backed only by Stu Hunter's mournful piano accordion (Inga is afterall living in Paris at the moment, the city of squeeze boxes). Apart from original album faves like Coma, Marmalade and The Drowning Song, bonus tracks include the Ali Omar remix of Marmalade, Mothloop's remix of Inga's unreleased Awkward Like A Boy tune, and the dark creep of You Shine. Included here is the original version of You Shine, recorded with William Frasier formerly of Baggsmen/The Hive and never before released. There's also an exclusive download for those who purchase the disc of a quirky new tune called Weku Weky (don't ask!). 19 tracks in all! This 2010 version comes, like all da dAdA exclusives in special hand crafted packaging with a stunning underwater photo of Inga by amazing Sydney photographer Paola Talbert.

Now repressed in digi-pak and available in limited numbers, is amphbian's first album, In Pursuit Of Plankton. Before 2003's 2-CD collection Adventures In Whistle Viallage was released via Groovescooter, this magical Plankton debut originally turned us on to the trio of minimal moodsters known as amphibian. A serene and sometimes surreal journey through an underwater world where╩gentle electronics merge with superb acoustics - double bass, piano/Wurlitzer and a drum kit, bow and sway with manipulated field recordings. New York's Steam called it "simple and beautiful", while Tokyo's Metropolis said it had "such depth and intelligence... one might draw comparisons with DJ Shadow in his more ethereal moments..." Sydney's Revolver (now Brag) voted it one of their top 10 releases for 2001, while Time Off said: "Red Snapper inspired jazz sounds... one of the finest albums to pass our way in a long time." Chilled? Definitely. Haunting? Yes. Like The Necks? Maybe in the hands of a strict editor. Somewhere between ambient and jazz-groove, it's the melodies of both the bass and piano, and the hypnotic ambiences amphibian set up, that give these arrangements such resonance.

The 2nd album from Sydney's own 'fun boy two', OLLO features the single The Campaign For Real Bread (see below for 7") and is released in Australia on Groovescooter (followed by 12 Apostles around the globe). The If If is like an hermetic iPod; mixing pop, dance, electro and downbeat home listening. With both a unique outsider's view of the world and a questioning plea from within, the LP's personal core is brimming with crafty ideas, smart programming, wit, insight, lovingly played instruments and evocative lyrics. Guests include Rok Poshtya (The Herd), Inga Liljestrom, FourPlay cellist Peter Hollo, UK trumpeter Roger Mills and Tooth's Kevin Purdy. Mixed with ex-UK producer Mike Burnham (Heliocentrics/Mowax/Output etc), it augments the fragmented vocal samples of Ollo's debut LP Sleeper with a more fully-crafted 'song' approach, as songwriter Alex Crowfoot's vocals imbue a greater portion of the swirling mix. Also includes Ollo's reworking of Fun Boy 3's The Lunatics (Have Taken Over The Asylum).

Don Meers
' 4th release on Groovescooter Records is called 'Splint' and finds Don building a sonic bridge between the frenetic electro-jazz of his debut EP '4.30am', and the lush cinematics of his much lauded longplayer 'Train Noise'. It's also Meers' most personal audio journal to date. Split into two disctinct 'sides', 'Splint' tails Don's earlier outings like a spy, craftily moving through numerous moods, whilst always staying one step ahead of the listener. As always, those carefully controlled atmospherics are bound together by strong melodic threads, fusing his European leanings with '40s jazz, back-alley electro-blues, warm acoustics, razor-sharp electronics and a legion of samples. From deep space ambiences, guitarscape instrumentals and noirish roadmovie tales, through to sample heavy bop-beat-electro-jazz and a surprisingly sad, stripped back closer. Including collaborations with Martin Kennedy's All India Radio, Inga Liljeström and Sloth, plus a fresh vocal direction, 'Splint' finds this cinematic maestro once again taking the listener on an imaginative journey.

Subtitled 'Cults Classics Curios', the cohesively seamless journey moves through varying moods; from forgotten Aussie vice-grooves of the '70s, to ambient electronic scores. All selections are from Australian composers/films with featured artists including David Thrussell, Severed Heads, Decoder Ring, David Bridie/John Phillips, Paul Healy, James Bond theme creator John Barry and Brian May (Mad Max). From cult classics like the The Man From Hong Kong (Jigsaw) and The Box (David Lindup) to obscure shorts or the unused early score to Head On by film maker/composer Philip Brophy, we pan across four decades of film and innovative cinema music. Also featured is work by Ben Frost, Kazumichi Grime, Tooth, Pretty Boy Crossover, Groovescooter artists Don Meers, Ens and Inga Liljestrom, plus Orisha, Jarrod Factor and The New Pollutants - 21 tracks in all! AUDIO-NOIR - A Surreal Night
Sydney Opera House - Studio

Produced by Groovescooter, a surreal event where we pull focus on The Studio for a night of method-music meets film-noir mystrionics; a full- length feature of sound and flickering footage. Starring femme fatale singer/director INGA LILJESTROM and her Elk sextet, you'll be transported to the set of a David Lynch film with the sounds and voice that many are calling Australia's answer to Björk or Portishead.
As a host of characters gate-crash the set, the lines between real-life, screen plots and the imagination will blur. Joining Inga for the night are R-rated soundtracker MICHAEL LIRA and his SINEMA PHANTASMA (with Jay Katz + Miss Death steering the film projector), alongside celluloid moodstar DON MEERS, plus the Groovescooter crew and coccidental tourists and maverick extras. Jumpcut from cliff-hanger chase sequences where upturned motor's still purr with electronic beats, to an isolated heroine shivering between icicles as the harmonics of orchestrated strings threaten an emotional avalanche.

Imagine BJöRK, PORTISHEAD + LAMB on the set of DAVID LYNCH film.
ELK is a stunning, film-noirish journey from singer/songwriter Inga Liljeström - the voice behind Gerling's hit single Dust Me Selecta, Hi-Fi Mike, Friendly, d.i.g. (Curveystrasse), Itch-e & Scratch-e, Alien Headspace, ENS and many others. Now the most distinctive voice floating above Australia's musical landscape delivers her first commercially available, full-length solo album. It's a lush and beautifully cohesive, yet darkly fragile work of immense proportions. That otherworldly quality fans have always associated with Inga, reaches new heights as her stunning lyrical images find wings to soar in a fresh band-setting where talented players provide live strings, contrabass, Moricone-esque guitar, fluglehorn/trumpet, keyboards, samples and fractured beats. To say the result is cinematic, is an exercise in understatement. "21st Century film-noir for the ears" [Tim Ritchie Radio National]. Read more here

Debut album for Brisbane based digital-jazz artist Ens [pron. 'enz']. With recent tracks on 'Evolutionary Vibes 5' and Tim Ritchie's 'Sound Quality 2', plus various remixes doing the rounds and bending ears - producer Ben Fairweather follows up with a longplayer that both dazzles and lulls; dark and brooding, uplifting and hypnotic. From the manic rhythm rush of 'All In The Mood' (where drummer Billy Cobham meets his cyber double) to the mesmerising beauty of surf-daybreak soundtrack 'Tranquilaise', Ens' dexterous programming is evident, as is his unique sense of melodic juxtaposition. Featuring interstate guests Sloth [ex-Meta Bass 'n' Breath] and Andrew Day [Nightswimmer/Sound Movement] plus vocalists Inga Liljeström [Gerling/Friendly/Baggsmen] and Georgie Zuzak, Ens has recontextualised his long distance collaborators, manipulating their offerings in an exclusively digital domain. The resulting output is an album of moodswings that somehow manages to also sound organic and fluid. Somewhere between the freeform hypnosis of perpetually unwinding jazz and the brooding intent of downbeat electronics. As velvet double bass strings slap against chrome plated electronics and brushed rhythms, 'Warp and Weft' glistens from beginning to end with hints of both the Ninja and Warp labels. Read more here.

Combining double bass, piano/keys and drums with digitally manipulated field recordings and nature samples, atmospheric 3piece amphibian have touched a deep nerve with both electronic/world music lovers. as well jazz, chill and ambient enthusiasts. Five electro tracks from sample freak Don Meers. Think bionic-beats, future-jazz + scattered-breaks. Imagine Amon Tobin, Cinematic Orchestra and the 6 Million Dollar Man's Steve Austin jamming it in the back of a taxi on their way to the Parisian Kaftan Club. Through a taxi window, a blur of early morning clubbers, aimless prowlers and street cleaners rushes past the lazy eyed passengers. Inside the pressurised cabin, the night replays itself in slo-mo to a soundtrack that does home delivery on a cushion of beats. Time: 4.30am. Place: Any metropolis. Driver: Don Meers.
