“…Chockablock full of anecdotes and stories…” [Film Buff Online]

“…FascinatingHighly recommended… and absolutely essential... Jam-packed with information …reveals some amazing trivia. Of course it wouldn’t be a proper music documentary without music, and [director Oliver] Murray delivers in spades, stuffing a murderer’s row of the festival’s legendary performances into the 93-minute film.” [Cinema Sentries]

“I refer to the Montreux Jazz Festival as the Rolls Royce of all festivals in the world” [Quincy Jones, Executive Producer]

In 1967, one man started a musical revolution that turned a sleepy town on Lake Geneva into one of the most famous festivals ever known. Queer visionary Claude Nobs had virtually no knowledge of the music industry, yet with drive and passion, enticed artists such as Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, Miles Davis, David Bowie, Etta James, Prince and many more to play at his Montreux Jazz Festival. Claude Nobs was also a fabulously eccentric character who continually pushed the envelope and became a lifelong friend to many of those who took to the stage. Thankfully Claude filmed the proceedings each year, resulting in an archive of extraordinary depth – much of which has never been seen. From revelatory live performances to jaw dropping b-roll and interviews, this highly enjoyable documentary chronicles one man’s unwavering passion for music and a life lived to the fullest, providing a window into the famous festival that’s still going strong today.

After its World Premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, this Australian Premiere for Groovescooter’s STROBE Film Festival at Golden Age offers Sydneysiders the first opportunity to witness some of Montreux’s fantastic moments. You will revel in some of the incredible performances (which often took place in intimate spaces where the was little to separate artists from the audience) and discover trivia like the fact Deep Purple wrote Smoke On The Water in response to the fire that burnt down the festival’s original venue: The Montreux Casino.
