The punks from Punchbowl guide us through the rough and ready world of the early 80s Australian underground music scene, all the way to the trials of a touring band in the year 2024. When the Ahn family came to Australia in 1974, ten year old Ray Ahn found himself in an alien world of meat pies and cricket in Sydney’s western suburbs. United by their outsider status and a mutual love of punk music, he and school friends Peter “Blackie” Black and Keish DeSilva formed The Hard-Ons, a band with a mission: to offend the largest number of people possible. Explosive live gigs and a hit EP brought them a fanbase, along with unwanted attention from local neo-Nazis and skinheads. Through breakups, bust ups and the grinding machine of the music industry, The Most Australian Band Ever have soldiered on with a wink and a grin.
Faced with racism, obstruction and the Great Australian Apathy, the Hard-Ons have done it all and done it their own way, reaching the fans directly with all-ages shows and non-stop touring. Their blend of punk, metal and psychedelia set them apart from the pub rock scene and their irreverent humour was a welcome relief in the dire self-serious grunge era, influencing generations of indie musicians after them. It’s a great pleasure to bask in the life-on-the-road memories, but beyond the music what The Most Australian Band Ever really achieves is a portrait of resilience and uncompromising dedication to rocking out at any cost.
