Amphibian
Now repressed in digi-pak and available in limited numbers, is amphbian‘s first album, In Pursuit Of Plankton. Before 2003’s 2-CD collection Adventures In Whistle Viallage was released via Groovescooter, this magical Plankton debut originally turned us on to the trio of minimal moodsters known as amphibian. A serene and sometimes surreal journey through an underwater world wheregentle electronics merge with superb acoustics – double bass, piano/Wurlitzer and a drum kit, bow and sway with manipulated field recordings. New York’s Steam called it “simple and beautiful“, while Tokyo’s Metropolis said it had “such depth and intelligence… one might draw comparisons with DJ Shadow in his more ethereal moments…” Sydney’s Revolver (now Brag) voted it one of their top 10 releases for 2001, while Time Off said: “Red Snapper inspired jazz sounds… one of the finest albums to pass our way in a long time.” Chilled? Definitely. Haunting? Yes. Like The Necks? Maybe in the hands of a strict editor. Somewhere between ambient and jazz-groove, it’s the melodies of both the bass and piano, and the hypnotic ambiences amphibian set up, that give these arrangements such resonance.
