Did you miss this the first time, when it screened just once in Sydney on an island in the middle of the harbour? Well with Charles Bradley himself returning to our shores in April to play Bluesfest and also Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on April 2nd with Alabama Shakes, we thought it was high time this award-winning documentary – which premiered at SXSW and went on to play numerous festivals around the world – got another large-screen airing in Sydney.
Directed by Poull Brien, Soul Of America tells the remarkable and sometimes tragic story of Daptone soul-singer Charles Bradley, whose debut album rocketed him from a hard life in the Brooklyn Housing Projects and an early career imitating James Brown, to Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 50 albums list of 2011. Bradley is now considered one of the world’s finest soul-funk artists, alongside reigning soul queen, Sharon Shones who similarly found acclaim late in life and also features in this moving cinematic portrait.
