“A visceral experience… composed of spontaneous, raw and unfiltered moments that a more complex or conventional set-up would have missed.” [The Upcoming]
“There are such sacred moments captured on film that I will always cherish, especially since the passing of my sister and my father.” [Peaches]
Following it premieres at the 81st Venice International Film Festival and Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinema, this is the second – but far more revealing and emotionally affecting – feature-length film about the fearless artist-provocateur to land in Australia in the last few months. For the past 17 years, filmmaker Marie Losier (The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye) has captured the dynamic and artistically agitative essence of PEACHES – the Canadian teacher turned queer transgressive icon, uncompromising feminist, and avant-garde techno/disco/punk musician. In Losier’s own words: “I am touched by her perseverance and her tireless energy to experiment and place her body at the centre of her art with great beauty and freedom. Peaches constantly questions and redefines the boundaries of her identity. The need to experiment, to reinvent oneself, the need to live fully, freely, and face the norms and hostilities, by loving, dancing [and] creating, remains at the centre of my work.”
Whether it’s Feist recalling her time living with Peaches above a sex shop in Toronto, slamming live performance footage, or personal insights into Peaches’ relationships – including with those with her parents and late sister Suri who lived with multiple sclerosis – if you’re a Peaches fan and want to go deeper, this is the film for you.
