“A glorious final performance.” [Variety]
“A stunning send-off for a beloved virtuoso.” [Cinemacy]
“Indeed, there are parallels to be made here with David Bowie’s music video for ‘Lazarus’, due to the mortal shiver of seeing a formidable musician playing himself off into the afterlife.” [Indiewire]
“Director Neo Sora imprints a distinct aesthetic that alternately valorises and humanizes his father’s incomparable musical mastery.” [In Review Online]
A definitive swan song of the beloved maestro, Ryuichi Sakamoto.
In the time leading up to his death in 2023, much-loved composer and pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto selected 20 pieces from his vast body of work to present in one special recital. During his final months managing a cancer diagnosis, Sakamoto was no longer able to perform live, but despite this, he mustered all of his energy to leave the world with one final performance, featuring just him and his piano. Curated by Sakamoto, this career-spanning presentation includes celebrated film soundtracks like The Sheltering Sky, The Last Emperor and Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence all beautifully captured on film – with precision and poetry – by his son, director Neo Sora. Baring his soul through his music and aware that this would probably be his final opportunity to present his life’s work, the film is a celebration of the artist’s life in the purest sense.
Filmed in gorgeous 4K black and white at Tokyo’s NHK Broadcasting Centre, with no one in attendance, cinema-goers will acutely feel the intimacy and weight of the performance as they become the sole audience.
After playing Venice Film Festival, São Paulo International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival and New York Film Festival, Sydneysiders now have the opportunity to experience Opus for its Australian Premiere at the iconic Sydney Opera House.
