Whether you’re after soul, boogie, disco, house, Afro, Latin, reggae or tropical –  on vinyl or digital set-ups –  for your club night, festival stage, park roller disco or NYE event – Groovescooter has you covered. Our DJs have played everywhere from the Sydney Festival and Soul Fest, to underground queer clubs like Kooky and Hellfire, outdoor Sunday feel-good faves Soul of Sydney and Vibes On A Summers Day , or iconic jazz clubs like The Basement – whilst also maintaining a number of long-running club residencies. We’ve supported everyone from overseas artists like F-Comm‘s Avril, John Morales and Los Amigos Invisibles , to Australian bands like The Bamboos and I’m Talking.  Having also played. or put on events at, just about every club/venue that has appeared and disappeared in Sydney over the last 3 decades, and booked DJs/live acts for spaces like the Sydney Film Festival Hub, we  can look after booking your event whether you need one DJ or a weekend of varied entertainment.

BIOS

The two main folks behind Groovescooter are Georgie and Paris. Individually, they are currently members of the all-female Queen Bee DJ collective and the tropically-focussed Afrobrasiliana DJ crew, respectively. For almost three decades in Sydney, they have played everywhere from the Art Gallery of NSW, Metro Theatre, Botanic Gardens and numerous Sydney Festival venues, through to small underground clubs/bars/warehouses, whether queer institutions like The Hellfire Club, Kooky, The Oxford and Colombian, or outdoor parties and festivals like Soulfest, Soul Of Sydney and Vibes On A Summer’s Day. As radio DJs they have been presenting weekly programs in Sydney for well over 20 years, and continue to host weekly radio shows (Georgie currently on Eastside Radio with the Merchants of Sound show and Paris on 2SER with Jumping The Gap, having previously presented programs together on FBi and SBS Radio). Beyond DJing in clubs and on radio, as producers/remixers, those behind the label have produced and released their own tracks, remixes, DJ mixes and edits on labels such as Creative Vibes, NZ’s FREq Records, Sonic Arcana, Kookyburra, WEA/Warners, Roadshow, Larrikin, Silent Recordings, Aural Industries, Rajon and That’s Not An Edit, using numerous aliases including Groovescooter, Society, Thighhigh Bootleg and Mothloop.

Friends from school days, Georgie and Paris first had their ears turned on to great independent music during teenage years in Canberra. It was Canberra’s then-radical university station 2XX that kicked things off, a station that was housed in a dilapidated building on the non-policed, inner-city uni campus grounds where the infamous ANU Bar was also situated. Here they could see bands like Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark on a Tuesday night, or witness legendary sets by locals Club Of Rome or the latest synth-wielding Sydney band. By now a passion for community radio and live music had taken hold. In the late-’80s their 7-piece funk band Elephant Talk would often perform at that very ANU bar, and it was this band that prompted a move to Sydney after they won the state finals in the JJJ-sponsored National Campus Band Competition/AIDS Benefit, resulting in one of Elephant Talk’s final performances at UNSW’s Roundhouse in front of some 2000 punters. Sydney had tempted them long enough. After relocating to Sydney as quickly as possible – but leaving the remaining band members behind – they founded and played in a bunch of new Sydney bands, set up a studio and launched The Groovescooter Show (and eventual record label) on Sydney’s 89.7fm – a programme that ran every Tuesday night for almost 20 years. Together they also presented The Album Show on FBi 94.5fm (from 2003 to 2005), as well as extended fill-ins on Radio Alchemy nationally and the Back To Funk show on 2SER. They have also provided guest mixes for various stations/shows including Triple J‘s Saturday nigh dance flagship, Mix Up.
