"A fine memorial to one of 20th-century America’s most brilliant, original — and cranky — thinkers" [Variety]
"...further explains how Vidal earned his reputation as one of the most respected critics of his time." [Rotten Tomatoes]
United States of Amnesia
"Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”
Gore Vidal was truly one of a kind. Novelist, essayist, playwright, critic, political candidate, raconteur and socialite, he combined a fierce intellect, sharp wit and seductive charm as one of the world’s most well-known public intellectuals.
The film is structured around a series of fascinating one-on-one interviews with Vidal, filmed not long before his death in 2012. Combined with commentary from the likes of the late Christopher Hitchens, filmmaker and nephew Burr Steers, appearances from Jodie Evan, Tim Robbins, Mikhail Gorbachev, Sting, David Mamet, Bob Scheer, William F. Buckley, Norman Mailer , Nina Straight, Dick Cavett, plus the best of Vidal’s legendary on-air performances, Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia is a fitting tribute to the man and his life.
